BEAUTY TIPS; My top beauty tips for January.

The hectic party season can be a stressful time, often knocking our usual routines
out of sync. The New Year offers a great time to unwind, get back on track, and give your beauty regime an overhaul, and beat those “January Blues”!
Click on the links to view the products mentioned, and look out for links to my features and reviews!

New year, new you, new ‘do!: Regardless of whether you’re the resolution type, the New Year is a great excuse to don a new hair ‘do. Experiments with different styles and products, or go all out and try a brand new colour and cut. It’s amazing how a new look can boost your confidence and give you a new lease of life. Your stylist will be happy to discuss services that suit your budget, needs, and schedule. Try turning to haircut magazines and the internet for inspiration.

January blues: Zesty uplifting fragrances are a great way to boost your mood while you wash. Clean, citrus scents lift your spirits and help to make you feel more awake and refresh your senses, so it’s excellent to incorporate something with a zingy aroma into your morning cleansing routine, be it in your haircare products, your skincare regime, or your “wake-up shower”. One of my personal favourites is Happy Hippy Shower Gel from LUSH (click here to read my LUSH feature) – this multi-tasker with energizing grapefruit scent that can be used to wash the face, body and hair, plus it’s natural and handmade!

Detoxify, don’t diet: If you want to shift some pounds, then by all means alter your lifestyle, but dieting is not the speediest option to solve suffering skin. Detoxifying beauty treatments can be an effective quick-fix for stressed skin. They work by drawing out toxins from and providing intense nourishment. Not only are treatments like these fantastically good for our skin, but they also give us a perfect opportunity to unwind. Don’t worry if Christmas has left you strapped for cash – there are options available for all budgets, from facemasks available at supermarkets and drugstores for under a pound, to much more expensive treatments available at salons and spas. Chat to your beautician for advice on what products and treatments would suit your skin in particular.

Revitalise rundown skin: The stresses of Christmas and New Year can leave us feeling tired and rundown. Whether it’s overindulging on calorific food and drink, too many late nights, panicking about Christmas get-togethers, or unwelcome winter coughs and colds, our mind and body always seem to suffer as a result of the Party Season panic. Remember, although it’s a new year it’s not a new season, and with the harsh winter weather worsening, you’ll need to keep your skin hydrated, nourished and balanced. Exfoliators are brilliant for making the skin look instantly healthier – their scrubby texture removes dead cells and dry patches and evens the skin tone, and the massaging motion used to apply it increases blood flow to the skin making it look healthier and giving a natural, youthful glow (this motion also helps to diminish the appearance of cellulite – a tip to remember next time you moisturise your thighs!). For regular use I choose Outback OrganicsFace & Body Scrub for it’s creamy consistency and gentle abrasive texture. For a touch of luxury, try adding a facial serum to your skincare regime. I adore Doozle Nourishing FacialSerum – handmade in Wiltshire, this long-lasting formula is packed with all-natural skin-loving ingredients and gives a youthful dewy glow without leaving any greasy residue. An energising skin treatment is also a great way to instantly revitalise rundown skin. Try using a face mask containing cooling ingredients like cucumber or tea tree to soothe and de-stress the skin. Products scented with warming spices help to relax the muscles, and uplifting citrusy fragrances are ideal for energising the mind and lifting the spirits (think back to my tip about zesty mood-boosting citrus scents). If you opt for a salon treatment, let your beautician know if you’d like your skin to feel rejuvenated and refreshed – they’ll be more than happy to tailor your chosen treatment to your needs.

Ditch dreaded dark circles: Almost all of us have blue-ish droopy patches under the eyes, commonly called “dark circles”, which are exaggerated when the skin is stressed and tired. You can disguise them with concealer, and regularly using a roll-on eye treatment designed to target and treat tenacious dark circles can help to minimise their appearance. They’re quick and easy to use, and many contain extras such as light-reflecting concealer, gentle moisturisers, and anti-aging ingredients. One of my favourites is Angel Eyes, a relatively new product from Angela Langford. It’s an all-natural roll-on eye oil that battles dark circles and dryness, and it contains cooling cucumber to refresh the delicate eye area. A little goes an astonishingly long way - I’ve been using it twice daily for approximately 3 months, and there’s still over half left! For a cheap and quick DIY option, pop a slice of cucumber or a cold used teabag over each eye next time you relax with a facemask for 10 minutes or so – it really does help to reduce dark circles and puffiness! You can even find some fun easy recipes for making your own face masks and body scrubs at home on the internet using basic supermarket ingredients.

The Weekender by ZPM
Give it away: Have you acquired a number or beauty treats over Christmas? Give away or discard unwanted and unsuitable ones, and donate unopened products to charity shops – if you’re never going to use them they’ll only be taking up valuable space. Don’t use a product if it’s unsuited to your skin type as it’s likely to react badly – the last thing you need is to start your new year with a blemish break-out, unsightly redness, or dreaded dry patches! Many of us will have been given make up sets and “bath and body” sets for Christmas. If you know you’ll never use they, see if a friend wants it or give it to your local charity shop. It will put a smile on someone’s face, and you’ll feel all the better for spreading a little joy in the tired aftermath of the Party Season!

Space-savers: Many of us choose the new year to try a different make up look with new products, so free up some space first if you can. Now is a great time to give your make up bag and bath and body products an overhaul. Check all your liquid make up (mascara, foundation, gloss, liquid liner, etc) and discard any that have dried up or expired. Set aside any products that you never use to offer to friends and family (I don’t advise donating or selling used beauty products as some people dislike using them if they don’t know the previous owner). Purchase a space-saving make up bag or vanity case to keep all your beauty gear up together. I love The Weekender by ZPM. It’s an amazing storage product designed to keep your things organised, and it’s wipe-clean surface makes it perfect for beauty products! You wouldn’t believe how much you can fit in The Weekender – as the name suggests, it has space for all your little products that you might take on a weekend break and keeps them safe and organised, and has a handy extra-strong hook to hang it up wherever you please. Practical and stylish, it’s available in a huge range of gorgeous designs to suit all ages, sexes and tastes, and they’re based locally in Shaftesbury!

Lighten up!: Give your skin a luminous healthy glow by incorporating highlighter into your make up routine. This versatile wonder-product is available in various formats including loose powder, pressed powder compacts, pearls, sticks, liquids, and mousses. For a radiant, subtly glowing base, mix a generous amount of liquid highlighter (my favourite is Barbara Daly Make-Up - Soft Focus) with your usual liquid foundation or BB cream on the back of your hand before applying - if your skin feels dry, you mix in a touch of moisturiser for all-day hydration, too. For a youthful shimmery look, finish your make up with a dusting of highlighting powder - use alone as for the full-effect, or mix with a translucent powder for a more understated finish, or mix with a touch of bronzer for a sultry sun-kissed glow (I adore ELF Cosmetics bronzer in

“Glow”). Of course, you can also use the classic combination of highlighter and bronzer to contour the face. Use bronzer where shadows would naturally form (under the cheekbones, around the hairline, down the sides of the nose, and under the chin), and highlight where light would naturally hit your face (down the nose, above the cheekbones, on the chin, and on the cupids bow). Luminous blush adds instant healthy colour, and I choose Rimmel Wake Me Up Instant Radiance Shimmer Touch (click here to read my review and to see photos) for a long-lasting flush of glowing colour with a light-as-a-feather mousse format (my favourite shade is “002 Radiant Rose”). For eye-catching peepers, finish your eye make up by highlighting the inner corners of the eyes and under the brows with highlighter or a light, neutral shadow – this gives the eyes an instant “lift” and makes them appear lighter, brighter, and more youthful, and also helps to shape the brows. Shades I like to use for this job are Givenchy ShadowShow in “Star Caresse”, Clinique Soft-Pressed Eye Shadow in “Starstruck”, and Younique Moodstruck Minerals Pigment Shimmer in “Sexy" (click here to read my review). To make the eyes look larger still, line the water line with a white pencil liner. Easy illuminated eyes in an instant!

LUSH; Poole's ethical skincare brand loved the world over. PHOTOS COMING SOON!

The LUSH shop and LUSH SPA in Poole.
This week I want to talk about the much-loved company, LUSH. Although no introduction is needed for this famous brand, I still want to give you some background information. As many of you will already know, it all started in the costal town of Poole in Dorset by founders Mark and Mo Constantine. This is where the first ever LUSH store was opened back in 1994, which now also houses the LUSH Spa (follow this link for treatments: https://www.lush.co.uk/products/treatments-0). Today, 20 years on, there are now LUSH stores in over 50 countries and the brand is loved worldwide. Every product on offer is handmade using vegetarian-friendly natural ingredients and safe synthetics. The LUSH team continue to fight their battle against animal-testing and do not deal with any companies who connect with animal-testing in any way to keep their products 100% cruelty-free. LUSH also
supports numerous charity projects and good causes around the world involved with animal welfare, human rights, and environmental conservation, and their heavenly Charity Pot hand and body lotion was created to help hard-working grassroots organisations in need of funding to continue their good work. All of the proceeds from Charity Pot sales go to projects supported by LUSH, and the idea has been so successful that it’s still going strong 7 years after being launched in 2007.

The Sunblock.
I’ve been a loyal LUSH customer for years, and I can’t help getting drawn into their high street shops when I smell the distinctive warming scent of their pungently fragranced array of natural produce, so I was rather thrilled when I was invited to an after-hours event at the LUSH shop at The Mall in Cribbs Causeway, Bristol, earlier this year. I got to try out loads of exciting ethical products from the ever-changing range, both new to the market and best-selling “golden oldies”. I indulged in something of a mini-pampering session when I got to try some of their recently-released range of five Sun Care products – who would have thought sun protection could be so relaxing? The first product I tried was The Sunblock, and it was something like I’d never seen before. “Shower on your sun care” by smoothing this block of skin-loving goodness all over damp skin while you wash, then give yourself a rinse and pat dry. It smells fantastic, nourishes the skin, and it’s SPF30 will keep you protected
Million Dollar Moisturiser.
from harmful rays for hours. It costs less than £10 and lasts for ages, so it’s cheaper than most sunscreen products and is likely to last much longer, too! Next I tried the divine Million Dollar Moisturiser. As the name suggests, no expense has been spared making this luxurious facial moisturiser. It has a high SPF of 30, and contains top ingredients including honey, jojoba, Evening Primrose oil, Shea Butter, lavender, Rosewood oil, Almond, Organic Sesame oil, and even a touch of LUSH’s radiant Feeling Younger skin tint to give a the skin a youthful dewy glow. Finally I tried Sesame Suntan Lotion, my favourite product in the range. I think it was the delicious, captivating, nutty scent of this incredible product that made me fall in love with it instantly. The main aim of this sunscreen lotion is to

help you tan naturally whilst protecting you from damaging rays. It’s clever blend of ingredients help you to tan by increasing the skin’s melanin production. You can read more about LUSH’s sun care range and watch a helpful video demonstrating the products here: https://www.lush.co.uk/article/our-sun-care.

When I was at this intimate event, I also got to witness exactly how the popular Catastrophe Cosmetic fresh face mask is made and what goes into it, as well as take a pot of it home - a good move, as I became hooked and it’s now one of my favourite LUSH products. It’s packed with calming calamine, chamomile, and Irish Moss gel to sooth, soften and cleanse the skin. It also contains whole blueberries which have protective qualities and are full of antioxidants (and they smell fantastically fresh, too). My LUSH friend, Alys, is also a huge fan of this mask, and she told me she uses the blueberries dropping off as an indication that it’s time to wash off the product – a helpful tip! Another one of my favourite products is the sweet and scrubby Brazened Honey fresh face mask. I’m a lover of all things honey, and I enjoy the unique texture of exfoliating products, too, so this mask was made for people like me! It also contains stimulating ginger, which happens to be my favourite flavour and scent, and my hair colour, too. The blend of detoxifying ingredients awaken the senses and leave the skin feeling fresh, smooth, hydrated, and squeaky-clean. The exfoliating ground almonds will also buff away dry skin and the antiseptic blend of sage, rosemary, juniper berry, cardamom and clove will help banish imperfections and balance the skin leaving your face looking and feeling clear and healthy.

I hadn't tried LUSH’s Bubbleroons before attending this event, but I’m a huge fan of their bath melts and bathbombs, so I decided to give one a whirl. The first thing I must mention is that you can either use it in one go, or simply pull the two sections apart to get two cheeky baths out of it like I did – double the fun! There are a number of bubbleroon “flavours” to choose from, and I went for the bright orange Yuzu and Cocoa Bubbleroon. Crumble it into the tub under running water to fill your bath with lots of sweetly-smelling skin-loving bubbles and fill the air with an uplifting citrusy scent, boosting your mood and making you feel energized and raring to go. It also contains coconut oil and that wonder-product Shea Butter to moisturise your skin while you soak all your negativity away.

I also came home from the LUSH event with a big pot of African Paradise body condition. I just couldn’t resist it’s sweet chocolate-like scent! LUSH simply instruct you to use it “like you would a hair conditioner, but on your body”. Smooth it all over your body whilst showering, then rinse it off and gentle towel dry to leave you with deliciously-fragranced and highly-hydrated skin. The sweet smell comes from softening Shea Butter, a scent which I always link to chocolate for some reason. This product is not only great for your skin, but it also contains Moringa Oil produced by a SLush (Sustainable Lush) Fund project. Use this link to read more about the SLush Fund: https://www.lush.co.uk/tag/slush.

Happy Hippy.

Now for a product that I’ve loved for years, Happy Hippy! I couldn’t possible not mention this mood-lifting best-seller. I’m sure many of you will have used it, or at least given it a little sniff in the shops! This versatile shower gel can be used to cleanse the body and hair, and it’s luscious lather leaves behind the awakening scent of zesty pink grapefruit. Frankincense and bergamot also give this cleansing gel an extra-zingy fragrance boost. Use it in the morning to give you a real “get up and go” spirit, or indulge with it in a citrusy bath when you’re feeling a little down in the dumps and need a pick-me-up to brighten your mood.
BIG Shampoo.
Sea Spray.
I’m a long-term lover of the LUSH shampoo bars, but I thought I’d try out something a little different this time and took home some Big Sea Salt Shampoo. As the name suggests, it contains sea salt - just reading those two words conjures up the smell of the British coastline for me. “Beach hair” is popular with lots of us, and the effect the seaside has on our hair is all to do with sea salt, which naturally makes our locks voluminous, bouncy, and full of life. This volumising shampoo also contains zingy lemon and lime to add healthy shine, protein-packed seaweed to nourish, and coconut oil to keep the hair soft and silky. It smells fresh, clean and slightly fruity, but not overly sweet. Just apply a touch to wet hair, work into a lather and rinse, just as you would with any other shampoo. Repeat the process for extra “oomph”! For the ultimate beachy hairstyle, finish your ‘do with one of my favourite products, Sea Spray Hair Mist. It too contains sea salt to add lift, and it also gives light hold for effortless natural style.

Dry shampoos have become all the rage in recent years. They’re now something of an everyday staple for most of us, not just festival-goers and party animals! Keep it natural with LUSH’s No Drought.  Squeeze the bottle to puff the powder onto dry hair, and then work it in with your fingers to leave your locks looking clean and fresh with a zingy grapefruit fragrance. Any excess powder can be easily removed by giving your hair a quick brush through after use. Moisture-absorbing talc and cornflour soak up excess oils and banish signs of greasy hair to give a clean matte finish. It’s great for popping in your handbag to give your hair a quick pick-me-up when it’s looking a tad unclean, and an absolute must-have for when you’re off on your travels!

I love LUSH’s range of hair styling products, but my favourite is probably Zest Hair Gelly (although it’s a close call between that and Sea Spray). This medium-strong hold gel has a fun unique texture, somewhat similar to their Shower Jellies. It contains uplifting organic orange juice and sweet wild orange oil which gives it a strong refreshing smell of oranges and a vibrant orange colour. Either dip your fingers in the pot, or, for a more fun application, tip the whole jelly into your hands and jiggle it about, then pop it back in the pot using the leftovers on your palms to style your hair. Apply the same way as you would with any other hair gel onto wet or dry hair to nourish, style, and give a wet-look high-shine finish with a long-lasting fresh orange scent. Less is more – a little of this stuff goes a long way making it excellent value for money.

I could go on forever about the extensive range of LUSH products, but the collection is seemingly endless and I’d be here a lifetime, so why not pick up a free brochure next time you’re in store instead? Remember that everything you buy is handmade with love and care, ethical, and natural, and helps to support charities and hard-working organisations all over the world to care for both your skin and your planet.

Younique: Best-selling US cosmetics brand lands in the UK!

Source: Google.co.uk
Hearing that a new cosmetic is set to launch always gets me a bit excited, so when I was contacted by Younique and informed that the company was set to bring their popular beauty brand in the UK in Autumn 2014, I couldn't wait to find out more!
Source: YouniqueProducts.com

If you're in the UK, Younique will probably be new to you, so let me give you some background information. The brand was founded back in 2012 by brother-and-sister team, Derek Maxfield and Melanie Huscroft. Their products contain only the bare essential ingredients and are packed with as much natural goodness as possible, resulting in a wide range of high-quality cosmetics that are suitable for almost all skin types. The Younique collection includes make up, primers, cleansers, skincare and anti-aging, application tools and brushes, and a selections of sets and collection kits. The entire collection is available online via the Younique website, but they also sell through their Younique Presenters - women who sell the range whenever and wherever they please. To find out more about becoming a Presented you can visit the website. Online you can also find easy-to-follow tutorials to looks you can achieve using the products on offer.
I was sent a selection of the versatile range from a lovely member of the Younique team in the States, Kimberly (thank you, Kimberly, for introducing me to this wonderful brand!). I didn't hesitate to get testing my beauty treats, and I'd like to share some of them with you, including their best-selling Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes mascara. To shop with Kimberly or sign up as a presenter, visit this link:
www.youniqueproducts.com/KimberlyPenning.

Younique's Illuminate cleansers are a huge hit. There are two types available that have you're skin type covered! Illumniate Clear is an updated, refined version of their hugely popular discontinued Awake Cleanser. It's formulated to help combat imperfections and keep skin clear, and contains skin-loving Aloe Vera as well as Liquorice Root and Garden Chrysanthemum. It's perfect for oily and combination skin. Illuminate Clean is a new cleanser with a mild formula, perfect for normal, dry, and sensitive skin. It contains gentle ingredients such as Superleaf Extracts, Horse Chestnut, and Ginko Biloba, and yet it's still powerful enough to help keep your skin clear and healthy. Why not finish your cleansing routine with a touch of Younique Brilliant Daily Moisturizing Gel? This great all-rounder hydrates, tones, and energises the skin leaving it looking healthy and glowing (plus, it looks pretty cool, too!).

Now, let's talk make up. If you're a fan of mineral make up, you've come to the right place! I'm a huge fan of mineral products, and so is the Younique team. There are a wide range of cosmetics available to complete every part of your make up routine, as well as a selection of high-quality brushes and application tools.
Source: YouniqueProducts.com

It's best to use a primer to just before you apply your make up, such as Younique Moodstruck Glorious Face & Eye Primer. Primers help to even your skin tone and reduce the appearance of imperfections and pores and softens the skin, allowing for a smooth, even "canvas" to apply your make up to. It also helps your make up last longer and prevents unwanted smudging, fading, and creasing.

Younique produce three types of foundation; Touch Cream Foundation, BB Flawless Complexion Enhancer, and Touch Pressed Powder Foundation. They also produce a loose powder concealer, Moodstruck Minerals Concealer. All of these products will help you ace your base by disguising imperfections, reducing shine, and evening the skin tone, and all are available in a huge range of shades suitable for any skin tone. I tried out two shades of the BB Flawless Complexion Enhancer, Bisque and Honey. My skin is very very fair, and I found that Younique's second-to-lightest shade, Bisque, suited me well (although I would probably opt for their lightest shade, Cream, next time). However, in the summer I need something to match my tan, and medium-shade Honey (one shade darker than Bisque) matched my bronzed skin really well! The light formula covers imperfections well and evens the complexion nicely without feeling heavy or looking unnatural and provides instant hydration, making it a perfect choice for all
seasons (especially the summer!). It's long-lasting, and skin feels moisturised and velvety-soft to the touch after application. This product gave medium-coverage and a semi-matte finish to my combination skin.

Now, my face doesn't feel complete without at least a touch of blusher (but I usually use blush, bronzer, and highlighter, too!). Younique Moodstruck Minerals Blusher is a loose powder that's easy to build up and blend. It's available in five versatile shades to suit any skin tone. Why not mix them up to make your own shade? Or add a touch of shimmer to it for an illuminated finish?

Let's talk eye make up! Younique sell everything you'll need to make-over your eyes, and their best-seller is the unrivaled, unsurpassed Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes. This stuff has had incredible reviews, and I've got nothing but praise for it, too! Whether you use mascara, false lashes, or both, this pioneering product will give your lashes a new lease of life. Using a simple three-stage process, anyone can achieve dramatic, eye-catching lashes with this two-piece kit. Simply apply the Transplanting Gel to lashes (with or without mascara as a base), then apply the Natural Fibers to add length, colour, and volume, then apply another coat of Transplanting Gel to seal the fibers in place. This easy process can be repeated until you're happy with your look! The result is a more natural appearance that false lashes, and a more lightweight feel than mascara. I usually wear two, or even three coats of mascara with false lashes in the outer corners of my upper lids, but with this product there was no need for either! Using mascara under the Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes adds more impact and drama to the end result, but it's not a necessity. If you do use mascara first, personally I'd advise opting for a defining, lash-separating product as it helps to prevent clumping, and I would avoid a volumising product as it can feel a little heavy when the Moodstruck 3D Fiber Lashes are added. The stylish, quilted-effect, protective case makes keeps your Fiber Lash kit safe and looking pretty, and it would make a great gift idea for beauty-lovers!

Younique Moodstruck Minerals Pigment Powder eyeshadows are yet another one of Younique's glorious loose-powders products. These build-able, blend-able, highly-pigmented products are currently available in 32 shades - 16 shimmer and 16 matte - and new shades are regularly formulated and added to the online shop. These silky powder pigments blend together superbly and can be used to create endless combinations and looks, but if you're stuck for ideas you can head over to Younique's website anytime to browse through looks and watch tutorials! Not only do these products provide high-impact eye colour for the lids, but they can also be used to shape, fill and define brows, and to line and emphasize the eyes. For a more dramatic finish, you can use the product wet by mixing your chosen pigment with a little Younique Refreshed Pure & Natural Rosewater (ideally on the back of your hand or in the pigment's lid), then applying with an angled brush such as the sharp liner end of the double-ended Younique Liner/Shader Brush.

If you prefer to line your eyes in the more traditional fashion then Younique have got you covered. Their Moodstuck Precision Pencil Eye Liner is currently available in ten sublime shades including everything from your essential black to pure white, and from subtle brown to glistening gold!

Let's talk lips. Lining your lips before filling in with colour has multiple benefits. Firstly, outlining the edge of the lips gives definition and acts as a guideline to help you apply your colour neatly. Liner also helps prevent lip colour from bleeding over the lip's edge making for a crisper, tidier finish. Liner can also transform the end result of your lip make up, for example, filling your lips with liner before applying your final lip colour will it will help to hold your lip colour in place and can effect how the shade would look alone. Also, using a darker shade of liner to line and fill certain areas of the lips than your chosen lip colour you can achieve a dramatic ombre effect. Younique Moodstruck Precision Pencil Lip Liner is available in five shades, from bright pink to deep plum and vibrant violet, and from classic red to nude brown.

Source: YouniqueProducts.com

To fill the lips with rich, glossy colour, Younique's pretty, perfectly-pigmented Lucrative Lip Gloss collection includes ten shades of high-shine lip shades to colour and nourish the lips. Whether you love neutral nudes, sexy shimmers, retro reds or hot pinks, your bound to find a shade you love in this range. The clear shade can be used to add a subtle touch of shine to naked lips, or over lipstick to give a glossy finish. The moisturising formula hydrates lips and keeps them kiss-ably soft, and the long-lasting colour provides and eye-catching look. There is even a mirror on the packaging to allow for easy top-ups on the go! I'm in love with the shade "Ladylike", and I can't wait to get my hands on "Lethal" and "Luscious"!
